The latter site is with probability conceived to represent the ancient Saticula, aSaticuia. town of greater note than those which have been lately noticed. It is doubtful whether Saticula was originally a Samnite or a Campanian town. Livy speaks of it in the first instance, as only allied to the former nation; (IX. 21.) but elsewhere he distinctly places it in Samnium. (VII. 32.) In this he agrees with Festus, who informs us, that it was colonized by the Romans under the consuls Papirius Cursor and C. Junius. (Cf. Veil. Paterc. I. 14. Diod. Sic. XIX. Steph. Byz.)
